Academic decathlon takes first at region

On February 8 and 9 the Wasatch High School Academic Decathlon team competed at the Regional Competition at Westminster College.  The team took first place in the Medium School Division in their last meet before state, with a score of 30,675 points.  Stansbury High was second with 28,585 points.  
 
Students competed in groups according to their GPA for individual awards and to add to the team score.  Each student competed in 10 categories: Art, Music, Science, Social Science, Language and Literature, Economics, Math, Essay writing, Speech, and Professional Interview.  The students have been studying individually and meeting after school in order to prepare.
 
Robin Duke won a silver medal for her interview; Sven Soderborg won silver medals for interview and speech; Hyrum Gailey won a bronze medal for math and silver medals for interview and speech; Fischer Wagstaff won bronze medals for art, language and literature, and math, silver medals for interview and social science, and gold medals for economics science and speech; Caleb West won bronze medals for essay and science, silver medals for language and literature, and science, and gold medals for economics and math; Eli Carlson won a gold medal for interview; Aiden Oram won silver medals for science and social science, and a gold medal for language and literature; Sean Pastor won a bronze medal for math; and Seth Saxton won a bronze medal for social science, silver medals for economics and music, and gold medals for art, science and math.
 
Seth Saxton was the top scorer for the tournament in his grade category and Eli Carlson was the third highest.  Caleb West was the top scorer for the tournament in his grade category and Fischer Wagstaff was the second highest.  All of the team members did very well and helped to put the team on top.
 
The team will compete at state March 7 - 9 at Dixie State University, and have continued their studies to prepare.  If you see them, wish them good luck.
