• 2020  Rocky Mountain Middle School Music Electives

    Mr. Bala- Instructor

     

    Woodwinds

    This beginner year-long course teaches students how to perform music on woodwind instruments.  We learn to play flute, oboe, clarinet, or saxophone.  We learn basic music theroy, tone production, and proper playing technique.  There are multiple opportunties to perfrom in concerts and other school events. Students are to provide their own instruments and rental opprotunities will be provided. Please consult with instructor before purchasing and instrument. Practice and perfromance outside of class time is required.  

     

    Brasswinds

    This beginner year-loing course teaches students how to perform music on brass instruments.  We learn to play trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, or tuba.  We learn basic music theroy, tone production, and proper playing technique.  There are multiple opportunties to perfrom in concerts and other school events. Students are to provide their own instruments and rental opprotunities will be provided. Please consult with instructor before purchasing and instrument. Practice and perfromance outside of class time is required.  

     

    Concert Band

    Flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and tuba are taught in this one year course and students are to provide their own instruments.  The school has a small inventory of secondary instruments that can be lent to students depending on needs.  This class is a continuation of 6th Grade Band though students with no music experience may be admitted with teacher approval.  Basic fundamentals, proper technique, and basic theory are introduced and reinforced.  Students will learn to play with proper balance and musicality in a full band setting.   Practice and concert performances are required. 

     

    Symphonic Band

    Enrollment is based on audition for this one year course.  For serious minded musicians, this class reinforces good technique and musicianship.  Students continue music theory, proper mechanics, and music language acquisition.  Flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and tuba are taught in this course and students are to provide their own instruments.  The school has a small inventory of secondary instruments that can be lent to students depending on needs.  Students play and perform in large and small ensembles.  Practice and performances are required. 

     
    Percussion 

    Students must complete one of the following prior to registration; one year of band, one year of orchestra,  one year of piano, or approval by the instructor.  In this one year class, students will learn basics in pitched keyboard and unpitched percussion, sticking mechanics, technique, note reading, and musicianship.  Students will perform in concert band and in small percussion ensembles.  Students will provide their own collection of sticks, mallets, and practice drum pad.  Practice and performances are required.

     

    Guitar

    Want to learn guitar?  Student's will provide their own guitar and will learn basic music theory, proper playing technique, and basic chords and strumming patterns in this one semester class.  We will learn to read standard music notation, tablature, and songs by ear.  Once we get started, we will accompany ourselves with the guitar while we sing!

     

    General Music

    Continue your general music experience in this one semester class.  We will learn basic music theory, compose melodies, harmonies, duets, trios, and quartets.  We will learn about music in other cultures, ind perfrom on boomwackers, hand percussion, and xylophone.
