Wasatch High Chemistry is a laboratory-based course. We will complete approximately 25 labs during the year.
Some of the topics we study in chemistry include: atomic structure, light and color, isotopes, ion formation, writing ionic formulas, bonding, Lewis structures, intermolecular forces, the mole concept, stoichiometry, limiting reactants, solution chemistry, acids and bases, thermochemistry, reaction rates, and gases.
In Honors Chemistry we study the same topics as we do in general chemistry, but we go a little deeper on a few topics and do a little more math. (Basic algebra skills are recommended.) Some of the topics included in the Honors curriculum which are not part of the general chemistry curriculum are: calculating average atomic mass, calculations involving energy, wavelentgh and frequency, learning to write electron configurations and orbital notation, and a study of how the quantum mechanical model of the atom helps to explain some discontinuities in periodic trends.
