MATH-LANGUAGE ARTS-SCIENCE-SOCIAL STUDIES

  •

Math will be primary focus within content areas.  Math essential skills include: order of operations; multiplying multi-digit whole numbers fluently; dividing whole digit numbers-up to four digit dividends and two digit divisors; add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators and mixed numbers; multiply fractions, and divide a whole number using fractions; add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers with decimals; write, interpret, and evaluate numerical expressions.

We will do this within an engaging learning environment, including explicit instruction, student discovery and engagement, teacher modeling, and hands on experiences.  Students will be provided real world applications where these concepts will be applied, as well as within story problems/applications, so students can solidify their learning.  Learning will also include constant spiral review, and tier 2 reteaching to ensure equitable learning.

Language Arts-will include a variety of reading strategies, fluency, and writing.  These will be explicitly taught and retaught within other content areas including social studies, and through our English curriculum.  Writing is a big emphasize-including citing evidence from texts, using text evidence as support for an opinion, and using evidence to support all writing genres.  Writing structure will be taught, however creativity, precision, and editing are all areas of emphasis.  Learning will also include constant spiral review, and tier 2 reteaching to ensure equitable learning.

Science-will include specific core skills for fifth grade, that also incorporate reading and writing skills, and both art and technology integration.  We will do this within an engaging learning environment, including explicit instruction, student discovery and engagement, teacher modeling, and hands on experiments.  Learning will also include constant spiral review, and tier 2 reteaching to ensure equitable learning.

Social Studies-primary focus is on U.S. history.  This will be implemented within cross-curriculum integration including reading and writing skills.  This will be done through both small group, pairs, and individual activities-that incorporate technology and art integration.
