COURE DESCRPTION The first instructional course in a sequence that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to lay out and shape stock; assemble projects; saw and sand projects; and stresses the safe use a variety of hand and power tools and machinery. Recommended projects would be anything that would allow students to incorporate all joints and tools e.g. a nightstand.

STANDARD 1 Students will understand woodworking design and theory.
Objective 1: Understand basic elements of the woodworking industry.
a. Identify career opportunities in cabinetmaking/millwork manufacturing.
b. Identify career opportunities in related millwork industries.
c. Describe the integration of cabinetmaking into construction schedules.
Objective 2: Understand the design, planning and estimation process.
a. Read and use a working drawing to create a project.

Objective 3: Understand and demonstrate basic math and measuring concepts.
a. Add two- and three-digit numbers.

Objective 7: Create a cut file.
Students in woodworking classes will be introduced to caree opportunities in cabinetmaking and millworking as well as related millworking industries. Cabintmaking is specializieds part of the contrstruction industry. Students will begain to understand how to design, plan and estimate projects. Learning how to read a working drawing, use a material list, and use a procedure list is major part of this class activities. Appling basic math and measuing concepts is key to sucess of students projects.
Students will demonstrate the safe use of woodworking tools. Students will be introduced to safety use of hand tools, portable power tools and power machines. Students will need to pass woodworking safety test before working tools and machines. Students will using woodworking equimpment to build a personal project.
Students will learn how to process materials. Students will be intruduced to the importantace of using materials safely. They will be introduced to the use of MSDS sheets. Students will learn how to use fasteners and adhesives. Students will also be shown how to use several different types of clamps. Students will also be introduced to using solid woods and man-made materials.
Students will constructing a woodworking project. Student will demonstrate use of several basic woodworking joints in the constructing of there project. Students will also be introduced to basic furniture hardware. After assembling project student sand and finish their projects.
