Energy Conservation Program

{save} Wasatch County School District school board implemented an energy policy in the Fall of 2007 directing the administration and staff to conserve energy and provide recommendations for improving energy conservation.

The services of Energy Education, Inc. was contracted in 2007 for four years to aid in the implementation of a more structured conservation program with guaranteed minimum energy savings and the promise of more savings.  The school district hired an Energy Manager and developed the district’s Energy Operating Procedures and Guidelines to implement the School Board’s energy conservation policy.

 Why Conserve?

Energy use and rates have increased over the years.  The cost of natural gas, electricity and water cost the district approximately $800,000 in a one year period from November 2006 to October 2007 the year before the implementation of an energy program.  Energy is a consumable resource, therefore, all the money spent cannot be spent on programs and other educational expenses.  Conserving energy saves in two ways:

1.      Money saved due to reduced energy consumption can be utilized for programs and buildings, improving our children’s learning environment.

2.      Conserving energy reduces our district’s carbon footprint and saves our natural resources for future generations.

What is the role of the Energy Manager?

·         Audit buildings for proper utilization of energy. These audits can be anytime during the day, evenings, early mornings or weekends

·         Identify areas where the district can conserve energy

·         Work with the facilities groups such as, principals, custodial staffs, maintenance department etc. to develop strategies to efficiently run buildings during classroom hours and effectively shut buildings down when unoccupied

·         Monitor energy use by entering district’s utility bills into a database.

·         Analyze and report energy savings on a monthly basis

·         Make recommendations to the administration on how to make buildings more efficient

·         Report energy savings and program effectiveness semi-annually to School Board
