Wasatch District's Philosophy of Special Education

*
Special Education in Wasatch District is not a location or program. Special Education is the services and supplemental aids needed for children with disabilities to progress in the general curriculum.
*Wasatch District believes in inclusive education which is a value-based practice that attempts to bring all students including those with disabilities into full membership within their local school community. Specialized services are brought to the student and delivered in the context of general education.

{text} Preschool: Wasatch school district preschool programs serve students from 3 to 5 years of age who have been identified as having a disability. Students attend preschool four days per week for 2 1/2 hours per day. In addition to students with disabilities, our preschool classes serve typically developing peers on a tuition basis. All students receive research based preschool curriculum instruction to prepare them for entering kindergarten.

{text} School-Age Students: Resource Programs for students with Mild/Moderate Disabilities and
programs for students with Severe Disabilities are located in every school. Special Education teachers work in conjunction with regular education teachers to provide services in the regular classroom to the extent possible. Para-educators are also trained and available to work with special education students.

Transition Years ages 18-22: Super seniors, those students who qualify for special education after the traditional years of school, receive instruction through our transition program. Students receive instruction to help them transition to "life after school". Independent living and job skills are the focus of the transition program.
